Flame

You are like flame.
You burn brightly, and you live by the light of your own glow;
when you are brilliant, you thrive.
You fixate on the warmth and use the shine
as a wall to protect yourself from the dark.
After all,
if you can only see your light,
how easy it is to forget your world illuminated by another!

The dancing flames tantalize.
They whisper to you, and draw you into their embrace
until you know that you wouldn’t be the same without them.
They are a purpose and a drive to keep fighting;
they are your life force, and you, theirs.

You watch as the flames engulf you,
and you are surprised to find that you harbor no doubt.
The flames are now as much of you as you are of them;
you watch as you stake your identity,
your sense of self,
on the flames,
and you close your eyes as they begin to flicker.

You are happy, you think,
because you are like flame,
and what else to life could there be?
You are like flame,
and you close your eyes as you begin to flicker.

Because although every match will burn,
it will never be a match for the gales of wind that rock the earth.
You watch in trepidation as the flame withers to ash,
and you realize that you’ve forgotten again
that even the brightest of flames burns out.
