(Roots)

Though I am not religious myself, I love pulling from religious iconography and using that within my work. Here, you see an a 14″x17″ watercolor painting of my grandmother in the likes of the Virgin Mary; her mandorla done in gold leaf.

Both my grandmother and my father are immigrants from Mexico, and my father met my mother when he arrived here. Throughout my childhood, my grandmother and I have been very close because she babysat me almost every day when my parents had work, and even now I spend a lot of time with her. I’ve always somewhat associated her with our mother Maria de Guadalupe because of the statues and photographs she kept in her house. I chose to create this piece to describe the way I look up to her and how important she is to me.
