Why you should start coloring— now.

Grab your crayons and craft supplies- it’s time for some brain growth.

What was your favorite activity as a kid? Perhaps it was reading stories, playing with figurines, or maybe filling in coloring pages. Whatever it was, you and many other kids have childhood memories affiliated when and how you used to pass your time. Regardless of if you used templates or blank sheets of paper, coloring is exceptionally beneficial for growth and development.

The biggest thing a child can gain from scribbling lines and shapes is stimulation for creativity. Letting a child’s imagination run can help engage the brain’s parts that process shapes and colors. Drawing is a way to show how they feel and how they might see the world.

With the human attention span at under ten minutes, coloring can help develop focus and patience.

In this case, a child puts in the effort and takes time to finish their drawing. Along with encouraging patience and focus, coloring can help develop hand strength, hand-eye coordination, and practice a proper pencil grip. Those three skills are beneficial to everyday life.

As an adult, coloring can also benefit your lifestyle. Like the impact coloring can have on kids, coloring as an adult can help improve focus. Coloring also has a way to reduce stress and anxiety as it relaxes the brain and helps clear your thoughts. As coloring can relax the body, it makes sense that it would also help improve your sleep schedule. In general, non-electronic activities can help increase melatonin.

With the start of school or work, maybe we should all consider coloring sometime this week…
