“I chose this song because it’s a reflection of the hard times that everyone is going through right now, especially those who are struggling mentally. Being at home and away from your friends and family can be difficult, but I want everyone to know that they are not alone. Even though it may not feel like it, life is beautiful and worth living.”

second place

hilary ly

instagram: @hilaryl_art

Hillary Ly is a high school sophomore living in Claremont, CA. She usually draws and takes photos, but she’s found myself venturing into painting more these days. Her favorite subjects to capture in my art are people and landscapes. In her art, Hilary likes to combine the more realistic side of things with a tiny touch of something more imaginative. Some inspirations include Rossdraws and Cory Barlog, as their work is absolutely amazing and they motivates her to get my pencil case out of the cabinet!

“The feeling of uncertainty is accompanied by apprehensive emotion. You could look one way and there would be joy, happiness, euphoria. You look the other way one second later and all you sense is sadness, sorrow, and despair. In the blink of an eye, in the turn of one’s head, everything could change… and we are the middle ground. Especially in these times, we should try our best to take care of these emotions, not so that they will consume us entirely, but so that they will coexist alongside us and guide our actions in these unprecedented times.”

third place

DESMOND WONG

instagram: @deswongers

Desmond Wong, a senior at Lowell High School, is a musician from San Francisco, CA. He’s been making music since he was 6 years old! Some of Desmond’s biggest inspirations are Harry Styles, Ariana Grande, Shawn Mendes, and Beyoncé. Some other things about him are that he loves movies and going to concerts!

“For the TAG Finals, I chose to sing Mirrors by Justin Timberlake. I chose to answer the prompt with the perspective of a person who might lose their loved one due to COVID-19. Through lyrics such as “I don’t want to lose you now” and “tomorrow is a mystery”, it represents today’s world as people are tirelessly trying to keep their loved ones alive and healthy. With these lyrics, it also represents everybody’s uncertainty of what to expect in the future.”
